Not sure how she does it, but Gramma's pies are the best.--Grandchild

Gramma baked pies for all sorts of occasions. She was known for making mincemeat, pecan, or pumpkin for Thanksgiving and Christmas and chocolate pie for birthdays. She made the pie crusts with ease. Gramma would sprinkle the crust scraps with cinnamon sugar and bake them for a special treat. Many relatives have tried to imitate her crusts but few have succeeded. Ready to give it a try?

Gramma's Pie Crust

Ingredients

  • 2 cups flour

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 2/3 c. shortening (Crisco)

  • 1/4 c. water

Directions

  1. Sift together flour and salt.

  2. Combine 1/3 of the flour mixture with 1/4 c. water to form a paste.

  3. Cut in 2/3 c. shortening with the remaining flour mixture. Mix well.

  4. Add the paste mixture to the flour/shortening mixture. Knead in but do not overwork (this will make the dough tough).

  5. Divide the dough in half. Roll out for one 2-crust pie or 2 shells (475º).
